Problem: Does an organism need two characteristics of life to be classified as a living thing?

Hypothesis- If substances A,B,and C do not grow and develop, then they are classified as non-living things.

Materials:
substance A
substance B
substance C
water
water dropper
3 Petri dishes
Paper towel

Procedures:
1. Obtain a Petri dish.
2. Using the top half (smaller), trace a circle on a piece of paper towel.
3. Place circle into bottom half (larger) and wet with pipette and water. Do this two more times.
3. Select 10 grains of each unknown A, B, & C and place 10 grains of unknown A onto paper of one petri dish, 10 grains of unknown B onto paper of another petri dish, and 10 grains of unknown C onto paper of the last petri dish.
4. Record observations over the course of 4 days.
5. Create a chart labeling the appearence, shape, color, and texture for each day. Describe the appearence by drawing a picture of the grains in the petri dish.
6. With the substances on the paper towel side of the petri dish, cover
them with the smaller end of the petri dish.
7.Place the petri dish at a steep angle/980-90) in shallow water in the tray.
8. Set the tray at the counter of your table.

Control: The water added to each substance.

Independent Variable: Substances A,B, and C were the independent variables.

Dependent Variable: Measuring the color, shape, and texture of each substance was the dependent variable.

Conclusion: The question being asked in this investigation was that does an organism need two characteristics of life to be considered a living thing? The hypothesis stated that if an organism grows and develops, then it is classified as a living thing. Our hypothesis is correct because substances A,B, and C became very soft. In the beginning substances A and B were very rough, and they changed into very soft particles. Substance C was soft and light, and it became very moist and melted.
